GRN Vision principal Rick Van Diepen, LEED AP served as project manager and sustainability team lead while at PGAL Architects. This new generation of Bachelor Enlisted Quarters (BEQ's) for the Marine Corps became a national model for aesthetic appeal, comfort, efficiency, amenities, sustainability and budget sensitivity throughout the Corps. Designed in a fast-track design-build delivery model, these three 4-story BEQ's house a total of 576 rooms for 1,152 enlisted personnel complete with indoor community spaces and outdoor amenities including a 500 seat amphitheater, barbeque and recreation areas and a 300-car parking structure.
Designed to meet LEED Gold requirements, sustainable features of the BEQ Package 9 project include a comprehensive stormwater management utilizing best-management practices (BMP’s), drought-tolerant planting, use of on-site graywater for 100 % landscape irrigation, a continuous fresh air supply system, high-performance mechanical units with heat recovery, energy-saving lamps and ballasts, water-saving plumbing fixtures, recycling/reduction of construction and demolition waste, recycled building materials and finishes, and low/zero VOC interior materials.
